Australia has been hit with terrible flooding that started at the beginning of the new year and has spread so far that it has now taken over a huge part of Queensland. At least twelve have been confirmed as dead and lots more are still missing.
The floods have been slowly building up through Queensland and a lot of places managed to be evacuated before the major floods hit but Brisbane city and Toowoomba have been hit by flash floods as heavy downpours have topped up already saturated ground and caused rivers to burst their banks. Helicopters and emergency services have been trying to get the elderly and less able to safety while telling everyone else to evacuate as quickly as possible.
Yesterday afternoon the south-east of Queensland was declared a disaster zone giving police the power to force residents to evacuate if necessary. The flood waters are as high as 30ft (9m) in some areas and could take weeks to finally recede.
Brisbane is Australia’s third largest city and is home to two million people and with flooding coming from all around the city the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has warned the nation that it is a very dire situation and to brace themselves for the death toll to rise.
